A Cherry Blossom Affair
Jaime Loke, a doctoral student at UT, met Garret Allen, an Austin homebuilder online. At first, Jaime was embarrassed to let anyone know that the two had met online, until she realized just how many couples actually do meet that way. They would chat until the wee hours of the night, even thought Garrett had to go to work at 6 a.m., and Jaime had classes the next day. However, in Garrett’s own words, “love makes up for lack of sleep.”

Greg and Robin met on May 19th 2005. He had signed up for a program called Camp America that recruits international staff for American summer camps, and he chose to work at Camp Stewart in Hunt, Texas. Robin had also decided to work at Camp Stewart that summer. Greg is from Dalgety Bay, in Scotland (just north of Edinburgh) and this was his first visit to the US. They dated throughout the summer, but knew that a long distance relationship would be impossible. After being inseparable for an entire summer, they knew that they would at least stay in touch. Greg and Robin talked nearly every day, and he came to visit her family that next Christmas, and made several more visits over the next 2 years. Things were extremely difficult being separated so much of the time, but they had such a strong bond. There was no one else that they would rather be with, even though most of the time Robin and Greg could only be together through web cams and microphones.
