Guests that visit Vintage Villas come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Here are our picks for most popular activities – of course #1 for all categories is to enjoy the cool clear water of Lake Travis.
Our Top 3 Picks for Adventure Seekers, Party Go’ers, Kids & Families and Romance Minded visitors:
1. Lady Bird Johnson Lake Walk, Jog and Running Trail
Lined by shady trees, the 10 miles of trail are primarily crushed gravel, with concrete in some places. The most popular meeting spot for weekend warriors who frequent the trail is “the rock,” near the north end of Mopac Bridge. Mile markers start at Auditorium Shores and head west. Each of the five bridges is passable and water fountains are located approximately every .75 miles and restrooms every 1.5 miles.
2. Mountain Bike at Reimer’s Ranch
Originally a rock climbing and hunting ranch about 20 minutes from Vintage Villas. The trails are fast with clean lines, broad switchbacks and open spaces. The ground is very open, so be sure to not only bring water with you but also keep some in a cooler back at your car. Dehydration is very easy out here with all of the direct sunlight. Remember that you are sharing the trail with livestock in several places!
3. Lake Travis Zipline Adventures
Spend three hours or so on the five different zips that are the longest zipline in Texas. If you are between 70 and 250 lbs and are ready for high speed fun, this could be exactly what you are looking for.
4. Sky Dive Temple
For about $180 you can jump from an airplane at 13,000 feet. Sky Dive Temple is about an hours drive from Vintage Villas north on I-35. New planes, higher altitude jumps and very competent instructors are why I would recommend this sky diving location. Definitely call before you commit the day due to wind conditions.
1. 6th Street
During the day, unique shops, restaurants and historic buildings are the main attraction, but by night, the street becomes festive with live music, shows and special events. On Friday and Saturday nights, 6th street is closed to automobile traffic for an all-out street party. Enjoy watching the eclectic nightlife walking from club to club at this famous Austin icon.
2. Broken Spoke
Voted best “Texas Honky Tonk” and local hang out for true Austin Texas cowboys. This old city dance hall dates back to 1964 when country musicians such as George Strait, Ernest Tubb, Roy Acuff and Bob Wills tipped their hats from this stage. The Broken Spoke’s slogan is, “We ain’t fancy, but we’re damn sure country.”
Kids & Families
1. Zilker Park
Hiking, biking, walking, canoeing and the Barton Creek swimming hole are all with in walking distance of each other in this famous Austin landmark. 10 miles of trail shade tree lined crushed gravel trails wind in an oval pattern around downtown Lady Bird Johnson Lake. Five passable bridges span the oval so that the route can be made as long or short as desired. For the kids, there is picnicking, playscapes and a mini train that runs throughout the park.
2. The Thinkery – Austin Children’s Museum
The Thinkery targets kids and their care givers from age 0 – 11 year. They were created to provide an interactive and innovative learning experience for children and their families. It’s best to visit the museum during the less crowded weekday afternoons. There are many terrific restaurants and cafes in the area and the Museum staff can direct you to family and kid friendly eateries.
3. Austin Zoo
The Austin Zoo and Animal Sanctuary was created is to assist animals in need through rescue, rehabilitation and education. They currently have over 300 animals from over 100 different species at the Zoo. The Zoo is open daily from 10:00am – 6:00pm and located in South Austin. Price of admission is $8.00 per person, but visit the website for year round discounts. The best part of the Austin Zoo is its intimate non commercial setting. It is easy to navigate and visitors can get up close and personal with the animals.
1. Hudson’s on the Bend Cooking School
This is a truly unique experience that Vicky and I have been fortunate to take advantage of on a few occasions. Hudson’s on the Bend Cooking Classes meet one weekend day per month and held at Chef Blank’s unique Hill Country home just up the hill from Vintage Villas with amazing views of Lake Travis. Jeff Blank is owner and world renowned Chef at Hudson’s on the Bend Restaurant. Be sure to book in advance because the class is small and intimate with just a few couples per class.
2. Visit the Wine Country
There are over 20 terrific Texas wineries in the Hill Country just west of Austin. The wine country tour features a trail of these wineries all with about an hours drive from Vintage Villas. The scenic tour takes you through some truly unique small Texas towns and is now the second fastest growing wine tour in the country. Annual events are held regularly and the spring wild flower season is the most popular time of year to participate.
3. Whole Foods Organic Market on North Lamar
Visiting a super market may not sound romantic unless you have visited Whole Foods’ flagship concept store. This is on many top 10 romantic things to do list and is also on mine. This is unique shopping experience that I can only describe as several small ten seat restaurants in each section of the store. Choose a filet of fish from the fish section for example, and then take it right to the mini restaurant in the store to have it prepared for you or choose from one of their menu items. Be sure to visit their dessert section with the chocolate dipped everything bar.
Vintage Villas offers a Hill Country Breakfast every day. Breakfast is served buffet style in our South Texas Dining Room – the same building as our front desk. Breakfast is for hotel guests, but arrangements for additional non-hotel guests that you may have invited to join you for breakfast can be made with the front desk.
Private dining for groups is available for Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch and Dinner. Please contact our sales department for more information on Private Dining. Perfect for bridal party gatherings and business
